Critical Watering Stages of Veg Crops

Careful attention paid to your watering regimens will yield
much better results.  With vegetable crops, critical watering times
are

generally during new growth and periods of flower set and fruit development.

Melons, cucumbers, and squash - during flowering and fruit development

Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower -  during head development

Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant --  flowering and fruit development

Beans and Peas -- when pods are filling out

It is also critical to water root crops, such as radishes, carrots, and beets,
as the tiny seedling emerge in the spring.

"Hairy" carrots and radishes indicate the roots have experienced water shortage during their critical growth period and have tried to compensate by sending out additional roots in search of moisture.
Keep an eye on your growing conditions, and if you are certain that the roots have not been starved for moisture, your soil is likely 'too fertile' so lay off the compost for a while.

An ounce of water is an ounce of prevention.

Happy gardening and happy watering,
Kathy and Patty
