Do you want to have stronger, healthier tomato plants?
Trench plant!
Frequently, this method is used for tall, leggy tomato plants.
However.
In our northern clime, this is a great way to
KICK START
your tomato transplants...
On the advice of an older gentleman gardener from the area,
I have used this method for 15 years
on every tomato I plant.
Think about it.
The further down you dig,
the cooler the soil is.
By laying the stem horizontally in a trench,
you take advantage of the warmer soil
all season long.
Tomatoes all will grow an extensive
root system along any part of the stem
that is below the surface of the soil,
thus a more robust plant.
The only things to remember are:
1. to measure your tomato spacing while keeping the trench in mind.
It will be different than if you are drilling holes directly downward
instead of horizontally.
2. to plant all transplants in the early evening, so they don't have
the sun and heat to contend with when they're acclimating to their new location.
Lay the tomato plant in the trench, cover the stem with soil and
GENTLY mound dirt around the top of the plant. It will be at a
45 degree angle when you plant it, but in the morning, that part of the plant
above ground will be standing straight up. Every time.
This graphic illustrates the pros and cons (Hint: there aren't any)
of trench planting.
If you HAD to say something negative about trench planting,
it may be that watering is more critical, since the roots
are so close to the soil level. I find that if you mulch
your tomatoes, not only does it keep them consistently moist,
it also alleviates soil splashing on the plant, which in many
cases, will lead to a diseased plant.
Please remember that this does
NOT APPLY to grafted tomatoes.
Give trench planting a try,
you'll be glad you did.
